Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an important branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been used for thousands of years to prevent and treat disease. It involves inserting a needle into a specific location (acupoint) on the body in order to stimulate a response and produce a therapeutic effect. Acupuncture is a holistic approach to medicine that can be used not only to treat pain/discomfort and underlying disease, but also to support and maintain overall balance and health. It can be used as a primary treatment modality or in conjunction with conventional medicine.

Dr. Garcia offers dry needle acupuncture, electroacupuncture, aqua-acupuncture and laser acupuncture.

Benefits of Acupuncture

  • Performance Horses

Equine athletes endure many different types of stresses, particularly musculoskeletal. TCVM (Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine), including acupuncture, can help in the diagnosis and treatment of many types of sports injuries. Regular acupuncture can maintain balance in these horses to promote optimal physical and mental performance.

  • Geriatrics

Arthritis and other degenerative diseases can be debilitating for horses as they age. Acupuncture can improve the quality of life in these older horses by managing their pain and decreasing their level of discomfort.

  • Musculoskeletal Disorders

Acupuncture can help to effectively diagnose and treat many musculoskeletal disorders that can cause lameness or decrease in performance including, muscle soreness, back pain, joint pain, tendon/ligament disorders, arthritis, laminitis and lameness of unknown origin.

  • Gastrointestinal Conditions

Horses have a very sensitive gastrointestinal tract and are at a higher risk of developing GI disorders such as diarrhea, ulcers, and episodes of colic. Stress, such as traveling, excessive training and other environmental changes can directly affect the horse’s gastrointestinal tract. TCVM and acupuncture can help to maintain balance and a healthy gastrointestinal system.

  • Neurological Conditions

TCVM can be an effective tool in combination with conventional medicine in the treatment of neurological disorders caused by traumatic injuries, infectious agents, and other conditions including laryngeal hemiplegia.

  • Chronic Conditions

There are many chronic conditions affecting the horse that can be treated and managed with acupuncture and TCVM, including heaves, anhidrosis, behavioral problems, PPID, and infertility.
